Mr. Southern is a product of the DeKalb County School System and proud alum of Cedar Grove High School (c/o 2000). It was in the Dekalb County School system that Mr. Southern developed his artistry through instrumental music under the direction of Mr.
Fred King, Mr. Gillmore, Mr. Terry Shores, Mr. James Berry, and Mr. Michael DeCuir. Mr. Southern began studying the alto saxophone in the 4 th grade, and later studied the euphonium. Mr. Southern excelled in the concert band, marching band, and jazz band
ensembles. He was an all-state saxophonist and was selected to perform in the elite Superintendent’s Jazz band ensemble, where he performed at the governor’s mansion. He was awarded the Super Saint Award as band captain in his senior year for outstanding
Upon high school graduation, he accepted a music scholarship to attend Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to study music education. Mr. Southern studied the euphonium under the tutelage of the iconic Dr. Isaac Greggs, the late Carnell Knighten, and Frank Chemay. While at Southern University, Mr. Southern participated in the SU Human Jukebox Marching Band, SU Pep Band, SU Symphonic Wind Ensemble (student conductor), SU Concert Choir, various brass ensembles at LSU, and has worked with former Louisiana Senator Cleo Fields with his Louisiana Leadership Institute (L.L.I.) programs. Mr. Southern was on the Deans List for several semesters. He is a member of the Zeta Nu Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, Inc.
Upon graduating from Southern University, Mr. Southern has led band programs in several states. His teaching career began at Baker High School in Baker, Louisiana. Mr. Southern later moved to Port Arthur, Texas and joined the music department at Woodrow Wilson
PK-8t h Technology Theme School. In the fall of 2009, Mr. Southern was reunited with his alma mater, Cedar Grove High School, as band director. It was been an honor and privilege for Mr. Southern to work with Cedar Grove High School and serve the community from
which he was reared. In the spring semester of 2014, Mr. Southern made the transition to Tucker High School as assistant director of bands. While in DeKalb, He has directed with Towers High School, Bethune Middle School,( Jolly, Canby Lane, Princeton, and Allgood Elementary Schools). He currently resides as Director of Bands at Stone Mountain High School in Stone Mountain, GA. He has led a group of novice musicians to top chairs in regional ensembles, SUperior Solo & Ensemble Ratings, and Superior LGPE Evaluations.
Mr. Southern is also a noted composer, arranger, and music producer, registered with the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (A.S.C.A.P.) since 2009. He has arranged performance music for ensembles at middle schools, high schools, colleges, and
